Missed the boat?
There are the cult wines that we can purchase, and then there are truly cult wines, the ones you can get only if your wallet has no bottom. There has been a consolidation of the true cult wines, the others, have opened their lists, increased production, and are available to the general public. It’s very rare that any new wines are actually added to the list of ultra premium, amazingly expensive, impossible to buy cult wine.
Enter Sloan. The wineries website tells of a cult already formed. The few who have tried it say it is the best and most amazing bottle they have ever had. Shipping to an already limited list, of which some saw the writing on the wall before the first bottle was released, customers were offered a 3 pack at an already expensive price point, namely $175 a bottle for something they had never tried. This in turn, translated into a 100% markup on the auction sites, fetching over $1000 U.S. for that same 3 pack. And this was only their second vintage. The 2002 vintage, yet to be released, that Robert Parker barrel tasted and scored between 96-100 points will no doubt fetch an even higher price at auction. Those that are just noticing this wine have the most minute chance of ever making their way up on the mailing list, the same impossibility as say Screaming Eagle, which doesn’t even accept additions to the mailing list. For the majority then, dig into your pockets, or look for the next cult, this one has sailed into the distance.
