WBW # 16 All about the label
Wine Blogging Wednesday this month (yeah, I’m a day late)focused on the label as we are told to pick a bottle based solely on it’s looks. This is a very interesting exercise, you should try it. When buying wine normally, I know what varietal I’m interested in, then filter my choice based on region. When you’re looking for a wine solely on it’s label, you notice a few things.
First, nothing caught my eye from Italy or France. I’m sure there are some creative labels out there, but they weren’t at the Trader Joe’s I visited.
Second, many labels are way to busy. There’s no simple look or theme on busy wines and they were quickly passed over.
Third, price has nothing to do with a good label design. The cool labels I did see where on bottles under $10.
So, Why did I pick the Parducci? It immediately caught my eye, and that of my wife’s, thanks to it’s simple retro look. Clean lines, good use of color, and a nice design all lent themselves to an easy choice to grab this bottle.
There was a chilien wine that caught my eye, which I don’t have a picture or name of, which showed off a big Chile pepper on the side. Big, bold, colorful, and in your face, that’s the way it’s done.
The Wine:
Vintage: 2004
Winery: Parducci Vineyards
Appellation: Mendocino County
Varietal: Chardonnay
Preice: $6.99
Notes: A nice wine, fragrant apple and toast on the nose, light bodied with a nice acid balance, short finish but very crisp with a touch of citrus. It’s a pretty food friendly wine that would make a nice impression if brought to a friends house.
Score: 86 pts JAT
