Wine Blog Wednesday # 17 Announced
I visited a New Zealand Pinot Noir in a previous installment of Wine Blog Wednesday, so it looks like I get to travel there again with the first installment of the popular virtual tasting event in 2006. The Cork Dork asks us to try some of the delicious reds coming from an area that has gained popularity for it’s whites, primarily Sauvignon Blanc. The reds are just as good, and include Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot Blends, and more. Hopefully we’ll have some nice recommendations from the Wine Blogging comunity after the event on January 4th.

I couldn’t agree more. Some producers out of NZ are delivering fabulous juice, but most of it is tough to get here in the states. For an absolutely awesome Pinot, see if you can get your hands on Craggy Range Winer’s Martinborough Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir. I’ve came across it at a steakhouse not too far from my office, and for retail, only found it in a few places in the States, including the Jug Shop (in San Francisco).
Cheers.

Thanks John, you’re right, the Craggy Range Pinot Noir ‘Te Muna Road’ 2003 (Martinborough) (boy that’s a long name) is available online through the Jug Shop’s wine commune store:

I’ll have to pick this one up. Thanks for the tip, keep them coming.

I’ve had some really delicious Pinots from NZ. But it’s still buyer beware. There are still some pretty horrid wines out there. I’m sure it will only get better with time.

Joseph,
It’s a tough grape to work with.
Even in Napa, not every Cabernet Sauvignon is perfect either. But you’re right, buyer beware, so get recommendations from a retailer you trust.
