Another thumbs up for Screwcaps
Screwcaps are continuing to win the praise of industry professionals. The University of Aukland studied the fruit factors in Sauvignon Blanc from both screw capped bottles and bottles sealed with natural cork. The study found that two fruity elements common in the varietal were 23% higher in the Screw Capped bottles.
“In all cases, the opinions on the wines sealed with screw caps were that they were fresher and retained their varietal aromas much better than corks. We have sealed all our wines with screw caps since 2002 and have almost totally eliminated our credit returns from oxidised and cork-tainted wines,” said Villa Maria Estate managing director, George Fistonich.
I enjoyed a bottle of Shiraz that was sealed with a screwcap last weekend at a small gathering. A friend and regular (actually, the original) reader of Wine Expression who now resides in El Salvador, Gregory M, brought the 2002 Mitolo Jester Shiraz and received quite a few comments on it. The wine was excellent, a great nose that exhibited a lot of black fruit character, well integrated tannins, and a smooth finish, with a sticker price of $20. I concur with the scoring of this wine by Robert Parker at 90 points, an excellent example of a great valued screw capped wine.

Ahh… Thanks for the correction. This highlights the importance of taking accurate mental notes of bottles enjoyed at get togethers. :o)

I like screwcaps for a few reasons. One is that if I recommend a screwcapped wine to someone, I don’t have to worry about it being corked and the consumer thinking it was a bad recommendation.
The sad thing is that many people are reticent to give or receive screwcapped wines, thinking they are inferior. In fact, the opposite is true. The recipient has the highest guarantee of a good bottle when it is sealed with a screwcap! (in my opinion).

Joseph,
I sincerely agree with you, which is why I’m delighted when I see my friends bringing screw capped wine to social gatherings.
Time is on our side, and eventually, all nay Sayers will be assimilated.
