Two Buck Chuck Chardonnay Wins Double Gold
The California State Fair Wine Competition went down last week Thursday, and Bronco Wines 2005 Charles Shaw Chardonnay was the resounding winner. The infamous 2 buck chuck received the highest accolades in the Chardonnay division, raking in 98 points, a double gold, with accolades of Best of California and Best of Class.
All I can say is wow!
I’ve had this Chardonnay before, about 2 years ago, and it was horrible. It actually tasted more like a Sauvignon Blanc, and smelled like funk. But that was then and this is now. With a thirsty consumer gobbling up millions of cases of this stuff, the source for grapes has continually changed, and it’s possible that this years batch is better than it was a few years ago. I guess it’s time to make a Trader Joe’s run and find out for myself.
Are the winemakers employing Malolactic Fermentation to appease the Rombauer faithful? Possibly. Is Fred Franzia laughing all the way to the bank? Definitely

i think i recall the last time you had the two-buck chuck chardonnay; we had the chardonnay blind tasting at your place. good times, that year the two-buck did come in last place. considering the massive amounts of chuck that are produced, i wonder how consistent the 2005 chardonnay will be - if you go to trader joes will that bottle be as good as the one that won the gold?

That’s a good question Gregory, and one that has a lot of people wondering. Did Fred send in a bottle of wine that was from a higher quality lot before it was blended?
I don’t think he would do something like that, but I don’t know him personally so I couldn’t tell you 100%.
I think there just might be a lot of sour grapes in the media on this story.

well let us know when you buy a bottle and try it out. there are no trader joes in florida, a very sad condition in itself, so we can not contribute to the taste testing…
